Mackinac Island's name derives from a Native American word Mitchimakinak which means Big Turtle. The British shortened it to the present name: "Mackinac." You can truly enjoy the beauty of the Great Lakes region at this resort city. It is a nice laid back city where you can sit down and let all your worries melt away. For some on who wants to enjoy the outdoors there's a plethora of historical and outdoor attractions to discover in Mackinac Island. History buffs are welcome to enjoy live re-enactments at Fort Mackinac. For others there is the option to hike, bike or enjoy a carriage ride through Mackinac Island State Park.
