President Obama’s farewell address was an emotional event for many, from the citizens watching at home and in Chicago, to First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, who sat in the crowd. But it was also a big moment for First Daughter Malia Obama, who, at the age of 18, has spent almost half her life in the White House while her father served as POTUS. As the president gave special shoutouts to those who helped and supported him during his time in office, he stopped for a brief tribute to his two daughters: “Malia and Sasha, under the strangest of circumstances, you have become two amazing young women, smart and beautiful, but more importantly, kind and thoughtful and full of passion. You wore the burden of years in the spotlight so easily. Of all that I’ve done in my life, I’m most proud to be your dad.” Malia was brought to tears while watching her father speak. Her younger sister Sasha was home studying for an exam the next morning. Malia, who graduated high school in June 2016, is currently taking a gap year before starting classes at Harvard later this year.
