Conservatives Will Make You Dizzy With Half-truths And Misinformation

While there is little doubt in the mind of the experts that people will lose coverage under Medicaid; Kellyanne Conway has come up with a new solution to their problem - Get a Job!! If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Jobs are not that easy to come by and most low-level jobs either come without a health plan or come with the minimum coverage that is legally required to be offered by the employer.
On Sunday, Conway told ABC's "This Week" that when the Affordable Care Act expanded Medicaid coverage, that "opened it up" to healthy people who could theoretically work. She said this as if it was negative. In fact, when you look closely at the people covered under Medicaid you will learn the harsh reality behind the glossed up interpretation that Kellyanne has offered.
Many able-bodied Medicaid customers are not out of work. They are gainfully employed but in positions that do not offer healthcare benefits. Parking lot attendants, for instance, do not get health coverage, as is the case with a gas station attendant. If their Medicaid coverage is taken away, they will be left uninsured. This is the population that is being talked about when we talk about so many Americans losing their health coverage AHCA. However, rhetoric from the conservatives has successfully suppressed this fact.
Kellyanne Conway said, "Obamacare took Medicaid, which was designed to help the poor, the needy, the sick, disabled, also children and pregnant women, it took it and went way above the poverty line to many able-bodied Americans,". She further said, “They should probably find other - at least see if there are other options for them."
Now, this is one of the most ignorant and myopic manners of looking at the issue at hand. This is not false, her narrative, but it is not the complete truth either. Who are these able-bodied working people? Why are they under Medicaid? Unless you expand on these questions, the statement by Kellyanne Conway can at best be called “selective truth to mislead and misinform”
"If they are able-bodied and they want to work, then they'll have employer-sponsored benefits like you and I do.", continued Conway. Really? Have you even talked to a common American of late? The problem with Conservatives and their supporters is that they actually do not understand each other clearly.
The information borne out of a research from the Kaiser Family Foundation states that: “Among Medicaid adults (including parents and childless adults — the group targeted by the Medicaid expansion) nearly 8 in 10 live in working families, and a majority are working themselves.” Moreover, 59 % are working whether part time or full time, their jobs do not provide health insurance.
Under former President Barack Obama's ACA, a Company had two choices. Either to offer health insurance to the employees who work for at least 30 hours a week or to pay a penalty. So making health insurance mandatory, Company with more than 50 employees were required to offer health insurance to employees.
While mentioning "Fifty-seven percent of firms offer health benefits to their workers," The Kaiser Foundation states that,“The likelihood of offering health benefits differs significantly by size of firm, with only 47 percent of employers with three-to-nine workers offering coverage, but virtually all employers with 1,000 or more workers offering coverage to at least some of their employees.”
The foundation further continued, “Among firms that offer coverage, an average of 79 percent of workers are eligible for the health benefits offered by their employer. Of those eligible, 79 percent take up their employer's coverage." Ultimately, the percent of employees that offer coverage get coverage through their employer in workplaces is only 63 percent.
So, while the healthcare companies like Humana (NYSE: HUM), AARP, Aetna (NYSE: AET) and Cigna (NYSE: CI) are gearing up for new reality under AHCA, people are making desperate attempts to come to terms with the facts of this new era. Miss Conway is not making things easier by spreading half-truths and misinformation. It is high-time she is called out for this.
