Is Berkeley going against its own history of free speech by muting conservative voices?
  Yes
  No
The decision made by Ann Coulter to not speak at Berkeley has started another round of debates. The debate is centering around free speech and the right of the conservatives to voice their opinion. The decision made by Ann Coulter to not speak at Berkeley has started another round of debates. The debate is centering around free speech and the right of the conservatives to voice their opinion. The hallmark of liberal values is the fact that there is a open forum in the society for an individual to live and say as they please. This freedom is offered by the liberals to Muslim Clerics who preach Sharia, to Black Panther activists who preach violence against the police, to the LGBTQ community, to illegal immigrants but not to conservatives. No matter how hateful the sppech, no matter how different their views, EVERY AMERICAN HAS THE SPEAK THEIR MIND. If they cross the lines set by the law the matter can be taken up in the court. There no NO JUSTIFICATION for people to take the law in their own hands. However, we are coming to a day and age where groups are dictating which law can be ignored. Some say immigration laws is optional to be followed and people who break these laws should not be prosecuted. Some say that free speech is a law that does not extend to Ann Coulter. THIS IS A DISTURBING TREND. This is bullying and even worse when teachers condone suppressing voices. NYU comparative literature professor Ulrich Baer says "The idea of free speech does not mean blanket permission to say anything anybody thinks." Well, in fact it does... What do you think? Should Conservatives be allowed to spaek? Is Berkeley finally a safe space where only those words that do not hurt the majority are to be spoken? Do Minority Conservative Students have the same right in a university as Minority Muslims in the US? Close this
